Northport Sunflowers!

Well, I suppose we are at the peak of the “sunflower season” here in Northport, that unofficial 5th season of the year that occurs somewhere between mid-to-late August and the beginnning of Fall in late September. The weather’s lovely, not too hot and cool overnights. And of course, sunflowers in gorgeous blossom all over the place! Above and below are several pics I took of some sunflowers today right here in Northport. I’m not really one to go crazy over flowers or gardening or all of that stuff, (despite the stereotype of gay men being potential florists, or whatever. Where’d that come from?). But if there’s one flower that really captures my attention, it’s these magnificent glowing sunflowers. I’m sure part of this is also the fact that the sunflower season heralds the coming of Fall, my favorite season of the year. I suppose if I ever get married, (that is, if the nation ever comes to its senses and gay marriage becomes legal…and , if I meet a man that doesn’t scare the hell out of me to think of spending the rest of my life with, …and he feels likewise, [lotta’ “ifs” there])…then I suppose I shall have to have sunflowers at my wedding. In the meantime, here’s a few more for you to enjoy, straight outta’ Northport!

Hey! I’m a florist, and a damn good one!! Have been for over 30 years now (yes, I was a toddler when I started). Check my website: www.kirkpamper.com. I guess I’m just perpetuating the stereotype. But as a kid, before I had come out even to myself, I made sure all my friends knew that despite working in a flower shop, I NEVER actually arranged any flowers! (well, not a first anyway)
Within a couple of years I was the lead designer, and the rest is history. This weekend I’m being presented with a prestigious industry award for my skills and dedication from the Society of American Florists at their annual convention.
By the way, I LOVE sunflowers!! And I LOVE Kyle’s B&B!

Kirk, congratulations on your award! That is so cool, you are very talented, (I looked at your website, and encourage everyone else too, also!). And I hope you don’t think I was implying in my post that I think there’s anything wrong with gay men being florists. I was just wondering aloud where that stereotype came from, as it wasn’t something I really ever thought much about as a kid. But I think it’s a very cool profession, and just looking at your website shows the sheer joy & creativity involved in it. Congrats!
