Here’s a gorgeous pic of Northport harbor as sunset nears…a vista often glimpsed in the background of many Kyle’s B&B episodes, (if you weren’t too distracted by Brad in his briefs or Breyer’s chest hair!). Pretty as Northport is, it doesn’t escape the merciless heat & humidity that is typical of an east coast Summer. I think I’ve been pretty vocal about the fact that Summer is not my favorite season of the year. Here in Northport, (and in the New York area, in general), we are subjected to some brutally hot & humid summers, and this one is no exception. The past few weeks have been particularly inferno-like, (the temps hit 101 degrees last week, and for a few days were hovering around 100); thank God, though, today the heat appears to have lifted a bit.
I guess I didn’t always feel this way about Summer. But after growing up as a “ski kid”, and then 4 years in way-upstate New York for college, I adapted to the cooler seasons. (Not helping any of this is the rise in global warming and the concerns that that brings).
I suppose we are right in the middle of what is known as “the Dog Days of Summer”, the hottest part of the season. This usually lifts somewhere in mid-August, when we enter what I’ve always felt is the “fifth season” of the year….roughly from mid-August through the beginning of Fall. Call it what you will: Late Summer, the Harvest Season, or, (my favorite), the Sunflower Season. This is sort of a hybrid of Summer and Fall….still Summer, but not quite as hot. A taste of Autumn in the air. And those Sunflowers suddenly in bloom all over the place!
Well, when that “fifth season” kicks in I will be sure to let you know. For now, here we are still in the “dog days”…but hey, enough about this. It sounds like I’m whining and I don’t mean to. My goodness, I’m sure my friends in Houston & Dallas could tell me about some HOT summers! The important thing, whatever the temperature, wherever you happen to be, is to be living healthily, productively, joyfully. So, it’s a little hot…big deal! There are worse things to deal with. (And at least we get to see things like Jeff Olsen in a skin-tight swimsuit!). Until next-time…
